The Huey Family Center located at 52nd & Pine Streets, within the Huey Elementary School is one of nineteen family centers under the Office of Community Family Centers in the Department of Human Services. As such, Huey Family Center adheres to a strict code of Core Standards that govern the quality and scope of programs offered. These areas of service are defined as After School Programs, Positive Youth Development, Information Referrals and Linkages, Case Management, and Parent Education. Huey's ongoing mission is to provide prevention services to the residents of the West Philadelphia Cluster, which is centered on the 19143 area code and also includes parts of 19139 and 19104 area codes.

Huey is part of a trinity of family centers partnered with Childrens Services Inc.(CSI). (The others, Eastwick Family Center and HOPE Family Center service the Southwest and Mill Creek areas respectively.) CSI is a one hundred fifteen year-old child welfare agency located in Center City that is affiliated with United Way of Southern PA. CSI also offers a myriad of services such as Foster Care, Supervised Assisted Living to older dependant and independent youth, and counseling services.

To fulfill the requirements set forth by DHS Huey Family Center offers the following programs:


GED/ABE & Job Readiness Training
This program is designed prepare the adult learner for the General Educational Development (GED) test. Additionally, the class will provide job readiness skills such as resume' writing, job searching, clerical computer training, and interview techniques.
Hours: Tuesday - Thursday 10:00am - 1:00pm


After School Tutorial Program
Students between grades 2 and 5 within the West Philadelphia Cluster may benefit from this academic, cultural, and recreational program. The After School Program is in session from Monday to Friday and offers tutoring and a full service computer lab for fun and exciting learning.
Hours: Monday - Friday 3:00 - 6:00pm


Parent Interaction
This program is for parents and their children ages 0-21. The activities focus on parent instruction, healthy childhood development, and school involvement. The main goal is to promote a healthy family structure.
Hours: Thursdays 3:00pm - 5:00pm and 6:00pm -8:00 p.m.


Sister-2-Sister
This workshop fosters positive self esteem, parenting skills, and stress management for young women.
Hours: Wednesday, 6:00 pm - 8:00 a.m. and Friday 9:00 am - 11:00 am


Brother-2-Brother
This workshop fosters positive self esteem, parenting skills and stress management for young men.
Hours: Wednesday, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.


Teen Explorers
This is a group for teens that fosters positive self-esteem, conflict resolution skills, and leadership skills with the use of group sharing, fun projects, and trips.
Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:00 - 6:00pm


Rites of Passage
This program focuses on the cultural, moral, and intellectual development of young women ages 10 to 12 years old. As opposed to the freeform nature of Teen Explorers, this program has a structured curriculum and clear objectives and lessons to impart.
Hours: Mondays and Wednesdays 4:00 - 6:00 pm


Soul Controllers
This is a conflict resolution and stress management group for young men ages 12 to 18.
Hours: Tuesdays - Thursdays 4:00 - 6:00 pm


Permit Study Group
Provides permit study group and on-road training and examination. Upon obtaining a learner's permit, through the Huey Family Center and completion of 25 hours of volunteer service, participants are eligible for free on-road training and examination.
Hours: Tuesdays 6:00 - 8:00 am


Senior Citizens Network
The Crochet group meets every week. Workshops and information sections on issues ranging from housing to kinship care are provided by the group's facilitator.
Hours: Monday, 10:00a.m. - 12 pm


TANF Advocacy
Women's Association for Women's Alternatives offers assistance to families navigating the welfare system onsite at Huey Family Center.
Hours: Mondays, - Wednesday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 pm


Case Management
There is an in house Case Manager onsite for individual case management and referrals.
Hours: Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
